Although the primary means of protection for a Christian should always be prayer, we also must recognize that the world we live in is a dangerous place. Church shootings, shootings in office settings, robberies, mall shootings, etc., are a daily occurrence in the United States. Fortunately, many state governments have recognized this, and have allowed their citizens to carry a concealed weapon for self-defense.
Opponents of concealed carry often say that we should rely on the police to protect us. Unfortunately, they are not around when the crime is being committed. If a bad guy comes into a convenience store and points a gun at the clerk, there is no time to call the police. By the time the police arrive, he will be long gone. There is a saying that goes, "When seconds count, the police are just minutes away." Don't get us wrong...the police are great and serve our communities well, but there are limitations to their service. They cannot show up instantly at a crime scene before the bad guy pulls the trigger.
Since the police will not be available to protect you or your family, you must do so yourself. We believe the Bible even supports this viewpoint. 1 Timothy 5:8 says,
"But if anyone does not provide for his own, and especially for those of his household, he has denied the faith and is worse than an unbeliever."
Providing food, clothing, and shelter for your family is great, but to turn around and refuse to provide a proper defense against criminals is also failure to provide for your family. Jesus allowed the disciples to carry swords for self-defense (Luke 22:38). If Jesus allowed his disciples to be armed for protection, so can modern day Christians be armed.
